Intel reminds us about Arrow Lake’s performance per dollar potential.

It’s been a while since Intel shared any benchmark charts, especially for its Core Ultra 200S desktop series. The company has repeatedly admitted that the Arrow Lake architecture did not meet expectations, particularly in gaming. Intel eventually introduced something called 200S Boost, an official set of optimizations said to improve performance without voiding the warranty.

Although the benchmarks don’t put the Core 200S ahead of the Ryzen 9000X3D series, credit is due to Intel for using comparable test platforms. The Core Ultra 9 285K and Ryzen 9 9950X3D were both tested with the same memory configuration: 2x16GB DDR5-6000 at 28-36-36-76 timings. Intel often highlights DDR5 CUDIMM support with higher frequencies as a selling point, so it’s good that they didn’t use it here. There was also no sign of 200S Boost being enabled. Both systems used the same RTX 5090 GPU and a capable 1200W PSU.

One detail missed by TechPowerUp , which first covered the story, is that the benchmarks are actually based on TPU’s own testing. Neither the editor nor some commenters seemed to realize that the charts were pulled directly from their review. It appears Intel is not publishing its own data, instead relying on third-party results to support its claims.

As for the benchmarks themselves, Intel (or TPU) makes no suggestion that the Core 200S can beat the 9000X3D series in gaming. However, there are some wins against the non-X3D models, particularly in the entry and mid-tier range where AMD has no X3D CPUs. The focus is clearly on content creation and performance per dollar.
It seems unlikely AMD will respond, since they continue to dominate in gaming performance. That leaves Intel with pricing as the main way to stay competitive. The performance of the 200S series would be less of an issue if Intel clarified its long-term socket plans. The company has never confirmed Nova Lake support for LGA-1851, and leaks suggest a new socket will arrive by then. At least Intel has confirmed Arrow Lake Refresh for next year, but according to the company’s CFO, it won’t bring major improvements.
