Multiple people shot at Mormon church in Michigan, police say shooter is down

One person was killed and nine were in critical condition after a shooting at a Mormon church in Michigan on Sunday, police said.

The suspect is also dead, police said, adding that the shooter rammed a car into the front door of the church and opened fire.

The shooting took place at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, about 80km (50 miles) north of Detroit, local police said in a social media post. The church was also set ablaze and police said they expected to find more victims.

Smoke was billowing from the building as firefighters sprayed the blaze with water while fire engines and emergency vehicles were parked nearby, footage on social media showed.

“There are multiple victims and the shooter is down. There is no threat to the public at this time. The church is actively on fire,” the Grand Blanc Township Police Department said in a post on Facebook, urging people to avoid the area.

Further details were not immediately available.
