MSI talks about its MAX/EVO motherboards

MSI has clarified the meaning behind the “MAX” and “EVO” suffixes introduced in its mid-generation refresh of AMD 800 series motherboards. The first wave of X870 and X870E boards launched on September 30, 2024, making this period something of an anniversary moment for the series.
At Gamescom 2025, the company unveiled several X870E MAX boards. According to MSI, both MAX and EVO variants carry a larger 64 MB BIOS ROM chip. According to reports from Chinese media, this extra capacity also permits onboard features such as built-in network drivers and experience-optimization tools. Integrated drivers reduce the need for manual driver loading during initial setup.

The MAX line adds yet another component: an independent clock generator. Thanks to this, MAX boards can support more advanced overclocking techniques, enabling enthusiasts to tweak BCLK settings in real time and push performance further.
MSI says its MAX/EVO updates are part of a broader mid-cycle AMD platform refresh designed to extend flexibility for builders without waiting for a new chipset generation. The company also plans to roll out MAX and EVO across diverse form factors, from compact ITX to large ATX models..
