Intel NPU driver hints at Android support

Intel has released version 1.24 of its NPU Linux driver, which works with the upstream IVPU kernel driver. The update includes new firmware, a refreshed compiler, an updated Level Zero (v1.24.2), and other routine changes. The driver is validated for Core Ultra systems based on Meteor Lake, Arrow Lake, and Lunar Lake processors.
One interesting detail in this release is new support for Android . This could tie into Google’s upcoming Android for PC project, which aims to merge ChromeOS and Android into a single platform for laptops and desktops. While Qualcomm is focusing on Arm-based devices, Intel and AMD may play a role in powering x86-based designs.

By adding Android support to the NPU Linux driver, Intel is preparing its hardware for AI features in future Android PC systems. This could improve efficiency, performance, and integration with Google’s AI tools like Gemini, more importantly, ability to run some AI software on local hardware.
Google confirmed Android for PC during the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit 2025. The rollout of first Android PCs is expected around 2026, but Google never specified the date. The updated Intel NPU Linux Driver 1.24 is now available on GitHub .
