Faster UFS standard coming

JEDEC has confirmed that the Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 5.0 standard is nearing completion. The new specification aims to deliver faster and more efficient storage for AI systems, mobile devices, and edge computing platforms while maintaining full compatibility with UFS 4.x hardware. It focuses on performance and power efficiency for use in smartphones, automotive systems, and other compact computing devices.
UFS 5.0 doubles the sequential performance of the previous generation, reaching speeds up to 10.8 GB/s . The update also introduces link equalization for better signal stability and a dedicated power rail that isolates noise between physical and memory layers, improving reliability and system design.
UFS 5.0 will include the following and other features:
- Increased sequential performance up to 10.8 GB/s to meet AI demands *
- Integrated link equalization for more reliable signal integrity*
- Distinct power supply rail to provide noise isolation between PHY and memory subsystem, easing system integration*
- Inline Hashing for greater security
*Features resulting from the collaboration between JEDEC and the MIPI® Alliance.
UFS 5.0 also introduces inline hashing for improved data security, highlighting JEDEC’s focus on protecting information in high-performance systems. The standard was developed in collaboration with the MIPI Alliance and builds on new interface technologies such as MIPI M-PHY 6.0 and UniPro 3.0.
Earlier versions, UFS 4.0 and 4.1, were major steps forward in embedded flash storage, offering up to 5.8 GB/s total bandwidth along with improved power management and protocol efficiency. UFS 4.1, launched in early 2025, refined these features with better defragmentation, more flexible WriteBooster control, enhanced boot units, and stronger RPMB authentication. Even so, UFS 5.0 delivers higher transfer speeds, better signal integrity, and improved system noise isolation.
