Yesterday we covered the first melted connector on a Sapphire Nitro+ RX 9070 XT . But within the last 48 hours later, four new user posts show burned 12VHPWR or 12V-2×6 connectors on GeForce RTX 5090 cards. The reports include both native PSU cables and GPU-packed adapters.
It’s worth noting that these are just cases from Reddit. No one knows how many cases go unreported, since many will rather contact original card sellers of GPU vendors for guidance on how to proceed.
Four new RTX 5090 owners have reported burned power connectors across Reddit. One PNY RTX 5090 user described weeks of black screens and crashes before reseating the card and finding the 12-pin plug charred along one row of pins. Another report from an MSI RTX 5090 Ventus 3X owner mentioned months of random freezes and flickering, which ended with a complete no-signal crash and a melted connector. Discussion in both threads focused on whether users should rely on bundled adapters or native PSU cables, with several pointing out recurring problems with MSI’s yellow-tipped adapter.

A third case on MSI_Gaming involved an MSI Ventus 5090 paired with a Corsair 1200 W PSU using the four-to-12VHPWR adapter. Even with undervolting to around 450 W and mostly moderate gaming loads, the adapter burned, leaving visible heat marks on one GPU pin. The latest report came from another RTX 5090 owner who found a melted plug after six months of careful use and regular cable checks. Their system used an MSI AI1300P power supply, and commenters again highlighted the same yellow-tipped connector as a common factor.
Recent reports show a clear pattern in 12VHPWR and 12V-2×6 connector failures, mostly affecting RTX 5090 cards. Many users experience black screens, flickering, or no-signal crashes before discovering burnt plugs. The issue appears with both bundled 4x 8-pin adapters and native PSU cables, though MSI’s yellow-tipped adapter frequently appears in user photos (I guess color makes it easy to notice burn marks?).

To reduce risk, users should follow manufacturer instructions for cable choice, ensuring ATX 3.1 PSUs use their native 12V-2×6 leads. The connector should be fully inserted until the latch clicks, then left untouched to prevent wear. Bending near the socket should be avoided, and strain on the plug minimized. Any sudden display flicker or black-screen events may indicate heat buildup, stop usage and inspect the connector. Also avoid mixing cable brands or third-party leads, and while undervolting can lower power and heat, it will not fix poor pin contact or design limitations.
