A potential typhoon forming in the northwestern Pacific could enter the South China Sea, the Hong Kong Observatory has said.

The forecaster on Wednesday estimated that an area of low pressure would gradually develop over the seas east of the Philippines in the next couple of days.

It was likely to edge closer to the vicinity of Luzon by the weekend, and have a higher chance of entering the northeastern part of the South China Sea, the Observatory said.

But the forecaster said the area of low pressure’s movement and intensity were uncertain.

A strong northeast monsoon is also expected to reach southern China on Sunday.

Hong Kong is likely to experience strong winds from early to mid-next week under the combined influence of the monsoon and the potential tropical cyclone.
