YouTuber rescues ROG Matrix 9800GT after 10 years at smokers house

YouTuber and overclocked Madness727 has just refurbished an Asus ROG Matrix GeForce 9800GT that spent about a decade in a heavy smoker’s room. From the outside the card still looked fine, but once the shroud came off it was a horror show: thick layers of tar mixed with dust, brown stains across the PCB, and a strong nicotine smell.
During disassembly, Madness727 pulled the cooler apart and found the heatsink completely clogged, the fan shroud stained inside and out, and even the screws and cables discolored. Perhaps this is a good example when one should not dust off the mess, unless you don’t mind wearing a mask for another week.

To bring the 2008-era card back to life, he washed the heatsink, shroud and small parts under running water with degreaser and a toothbrush, cleaned the PCB with degreaser and isopropyl alcohol, then dried everything with a towel, blower and heat gun. The fan motor was cleaned with isopropyl, the bearing re-lubed (with bike chain lubricant in this case), and fresh PTM/thermal material went onto the GPU.

The end result looks almost like a new card. The cooler and shroud have no visible scratches, the sticker survived the bath, and all MLCCs and resistors on the PCB are still in place. Despite 17 years of age and around 10 years in a smoke-filled environment, the ROG Matrix 9800GT fired right up, outputting a picture and managing around 16 FPS in Crysis in his test system.
I recently got This ASUS 9800GT MATRIX that was in Abysmal condition from a Smokers home.
It was so bad that I decided to make a video going over the Full Refurbishing process.
The results are INCREDIBLE! https://t.co/ot6PwgfnPg pic.twitter.com/JVYEoZ8hGP— Madness! (@Madness727) November 8, 2025
Madness727 says this GPU will likely go to a collector, just like the other Matrix 9800GT cards he owned in the past. For everyone else still daily-driving old hardware: maybe don’t smoke near your rig… and please remember to clean your cards once in a while.
