Colorful shows first BTF 3.0 concept PC with cable free interior and hybrid GPU power

DIYAPE, the creator and founder of the BTF (Back To The Future) backside connector project, has now presented the third version of his design. BTF 3.0 takes the cable free idea to a new stage. The latest presentation on YouTube follows a long series of closed door briefings held at companies such as ASUS, MSI and Colorful, which have been key partners for the first and second generation BTF products.

Calling the project a success may still be a stretch, but it matters that several large vendors are behind it. If this were limited to a single brand, it would likely never have left the prototype stage. The design is open to any brand that wants to adopt it, which is why we already have BTF compatible motherboards, GPUs and cases that hide most of the graphics card cabling.

Even the upcoming ROG Matrix RTX 5090, ASUS’ flagship card , is planned with this connector. ASUS uses the new GC-HPWR interface together with standard power cables to reach up to 800W TDP. This shows how central the back plug idea has become for at least one major vendor.

The first BTF generation simply moved front panel and power connectors to the back of the board. Many brands tried their own twists on this, but only now is the idea getting close to a shared spec, helped by case makers that ship chassis prepared for hidden connectors. The second generation added GPU power pads and BTF style graphics cards, which removed the need for visible PCIe power cables in compatible cases.

BTF 3.0 what’s new

BTF 3.0 takes the backside connector idea from BTF 2.0 and turns it into a full power and I/O spec. CPU, GPU and motherboard share a single rear gold finger power connector rated for up to 2145W, with 1680W reserved for CPU and GPU. Front-panel I/O such as USB-C, USB 3.0, audio and the switch header are grouped into one rear block that connects to the case with a single harness, and extra 4-pin headers on the back of the board provide power for up to four SATA drives, replacing separate SATA power leads.

Power delivery is also reworked around a PSU with no direct cables to the motherboard. A BTF 3.0 power supply uses a rear gold finger interface instead of 24-pin and PCIe plugs, while still allowing standard ATX 3.0 units through an adapter. The PSU sits to the right of the motherboard to match CPU power planes and leave room for a top radiator. Graphics cards follow a hybrid model: they retain side power connectors but can add a small adapter board that converts them to gold finger power for BTF builds, so the same card still works in a normal ATX system.

A BTF 3.0 case must accept both BTF and standard hardware, support short-tube BTF liquid coolers, and define clean cable paths from the CPU block. It also adds a “fan cable free” layout, with pre-installed fan power and RGB hubs, routed channels and connectors placed near each fan mount, plus an optional concept where the fan is powered as it is screwed in.

Compared with Back Plug 1.0 (backside board, hidden GPU power, matching case) and Back Plug 2.0 (GPU power pads, gold-finger GPUs, side PSU), BTF 3.0 adds integrated gold-finger power for board and GPU, a gold-finger PSU, hybrid GPUs, short-tube coolers and the fan cable-free case design.

To prove that BTF 3.0 is more than slides, DIYAPE shows a working engineering sample. Colorful and Segotep helped assemble the first complete concept PC built to the new spec, including a prototype Colorful graphics card and matching chassis.

He estimates that the finished system already reaches most of the “no visible cable” standard he once admired in Apple’s Mac Pro. Fan cabling is the last missing part before the build reaches his own target.

BTF 3.0 is still a proposal. Adoption now depends on how many brands join the BTF 3.0 Alliance and decide to ship compatible boards, cards, PSUs, cases, coolers and fans. For now, the Colorful concept PC is the first public proof that the full back plug, single connector idea can work on a consumer gaming tower.

Personally, I think the idea is great, but I would rather not see PSU taking center stage in modern build. The creator uploaded the video to YouTube, so you can watch it with subtitles.
