Sony PlayStation 5 Sales Surpass 84 Million Global Units

Sony announced that its PlayStation 5 has sold over 84.2 million units worldwide, as revealed in the company's second-quarter 2025 results. The company reported shipping 3.9 million units during the quarter, describing this as steady momentum for its flagship hardware as it approaches its fourth year on the market. This shipment figure marks a slight year-over-year increase from the 3.8 million units shipped in the same period last year, continuing a trend of modest gains throughout the current fiscal year. As these gains gradually accumulate, Sony's hardware market continues to expand, providing the company with the incentive to invest in next-generation console development.

Sony emphasized that consumer interest in the PS5 remains strong even as the platform matures and expressed expectations for a larger sales increase next year, linked to the delayed release of Grand Theft Auto VI, now scheduled for November 2026. Sony's exclusive content strategy also showed promise with Ghost of Yotei, which launched after the quarter ended and has already sold approximately 3.3 million copies. However, not all metrics were positive. PlayStation Network's monthly active users dropped to 119 million from 123 million in the previous quarter, indicating a decline in engagement. This decrease was offset by strong software performance, as first-party title sales rose by about one million copies year over year.
