Sony launches Japan-only PS5 Digital Edition for console’s fifth anniversary
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a new PlayStation 5 Digital Edition model that will be sold only in Japan. The “PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Japanese Only” console goes on sale on November 21 for 55,000 yen (around $355 USD), timed with the fifth anniversary of the PS5 launch. That price is about 18,000 yen lower than the standard PS5 Digital Edition currently sold in Japan, and well below the digital model in the United States, which now sits around $500 after recent price hikes and tariffs. Just do note that the converted Japanese price still includes 10% consumption tax, so its much cheaper regardless.
This SKU is region locked. The system language can only be set to Japanese, and it only works with PlayStation Network accounts registered in Japan. Downloads are limited to the Japanese PlayStation Store, so imported units will not function as a multilingual global console. It is the first PlayStation hardware since the PlayStation 2 to ship with such restrictions, mirroring Nintendo’s own cheaper domestic only Switch 2 packages for the Japanese market.

Hardware changes are small. The console keeps the same custom SSD based design with 825 GB of storage and support for downloadable PS5 and PS4 titles. The chassis uses a matte finish, and the system supports the current CFI 2000 series accessories, including the external Ultra HD Blu ray disc drive. The bundle includes a DualSense controller, HDMI cable, USB cable, and power cable, with Astro’s Playroom preinstalled.
Sony is tying the launch to a “Go Go PS5” anniversary campaign in Japan, playing on the double five in the 55,000 yen price. Eligible Japanese PSN users can receive a ten percent PlayStation Store coupon, with more local offers and promotions listed on the anniversary campaign site and PlayStation Blog.
