Repair tech replaces 16-pin connector with thicker pins to fix RTX 5090 melting issues

Repair tech tests thicker 16-pin connector on RTX 5090, keeps temps near 50°C at 600W

A Chinese GPU repair specialist has shown a revised 16-pin power connector with thicker pins that she now installs on melted GeForce RTX 5090 cards. In her latest Bilibili video, she replaces the burned socket on an ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5090 (which looks to be using some custom white-wrap) and measures around 40–50°C at the connector under a reported 600W load, even with NVIDIA’s 180-degree adapter still in the loop.

The video show how sensitive the 16-pin (12V-2×6) connector is on high-end RTX 50 series cards. The GPU can pull more than 50A through the 12V pins, if some pins do not make proper contact, the remaining ones carry the extra current and overheat. That behavior has already produced a long list of melted connectors on RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 cards, despite the updated 12V-2×6 spec.

In this case, the card arrived with a melted 16-pin socket on the GPU and damage on the 180-degree adapter as well. The technician removes the original connector, cleans the through-holes, and solders in a newer socket with visibly thicker power pins. She says she has repaired many similar 16-pin failures and now keeps these updated parts in stock, but still tells viewers to avoid angled adapters and to plug the cable directly into the card whenever possible.

Uniko’s Hardware, which picked up the story, notes that failed connectors often show thinner burned pins next to thicker ones that survived, and suggests that larger contact surfaces help spread the current more safely. The technician’s thermal camera readings around 45–50°C at 600W back that up, at least for this sample, compared with reports of 16-pin connectors climbing above 100°C in worst-case scenarios.

This kind of repair does not remove the core design limits of the 16-pin standard, but it points to a practical way to reduce risk on existing RTX 50 series boards. Connector vendors already appear to be revising their parts with thicker terminals and new cable designs, while other engineers experiment with per-pin current sensing and improved cables to catch bad contact earlier.
