Steam Machine with SteamOS announced, features six-core Zen4 CPU, RDNA3 GPU with 28CUs

Valve officially revives Steam Machine: a compact 4K-ready gaming PC powered by AMD hardware

Valve has announced the return of the Steam Machine, a small form factor PC running SteamOS and designed for living room gaming. The new system joins the Steam Deck and Steam Frame as part of Valve’s expanding Steam Hardware lineup, set to launch in early 2026.

Last-gen specs, up to six times faster than Steam Deck promise

According to Valve, Steam Machine delivers over six times the performance of Steam Deck. It’s equipped with a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 processor featuring 6 cores and 12 threads, clocked up to 4.8 GHz at a 30W TDP. Graphics are handled by a semi-custom AMD RDNA3 GPU with 28 Compute Units , running at 2.45 GHz and rated for 110W TDP.

Do note, this is not just one chip (APU), but two chips in one system. The GPU is basically a Navi 33 GPU with TDP at around 130W TDP, it is said, and 8GB GDDR6 memory. Those are a bit underwhelming specs, but we know how good Steam Deck can be with optimizations compared to even more premium handhelds, so perhaps it doesn’t ‘matter as much as optimizations.

The system supports 4K gaming at 60 FPS with AMD FSR upscaling and includes 16GB DDR5 system memory paired with 8GB GDDR6 VRAM.

Compact design with full-size performance

Steam Machine fits its hardware into a 6-inch (~160mm) cube, weighing 2.6 kg. Despite the small footprint, it features an internal power supply and runs cool and quiet, even during intensive workloads. Both include a high-speed microSD card slot for expandable storage.

The device supports Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and has a built-in wireless adapter for the Steam Controller, allowing direct pairing for up to four controllers without an external dongle.

I/O options include:

  • DisplayPort 1.4 (up to 4K @ 240Hz or 8K @ 60Hz, HDR and FreeSync)
  • HDMI 2.0 (up to 4K @ 120Hz, HDR and CEC)
  • 1x USB-C 3.2 Gen 2
  • 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 (front)
  • 2x USB-A 2.0 (rear)
  • Gigabit Ethernet

The front panel also features a customizable RGB LED strip with 17 addressable zones that can display system status or custom animations.

SteamOS and flexibility

Steam Machine runs SteamOS, optimized for gaming and fast suspend/resume. Valve will also extend the Steam Verified program to include Steam Machine compatibility ratings. Like Steam Deck, the system remains fully open, users can install their own applications or even another operating system.

Availability in early 2026

Valve confirms the new Steam Machine will be part of its Steam Hardware lineup in early 2026, alongside the Steam Frame and Steam Controller refresh. Pricing has not yet been announced. The Verge reports that Valve specifically mentions they intend to sell this product at the price of an entry-level PC with similar specs. They concluded that they could put together a system like this (specifically of similar size) for $800, maybe $1000 without storage and memory.
