MSI Project Zero backside power connector design reaches entry level with first AMD B840 motherboard

MSI PRO B840M-P EVO PZ motherboard announced

Finally on entry-level chipset.

MSI has introduced the PRO B840M-P EVO WIFI6E PZ, the first AMD B840 motherboard with the company’s back-connect layout. The PZ suffix stands for Project Zero and marks boards that move most connectors to the rear side of the PCB, leaving the component side clean for cable-free builds. The microATX board supports AMD Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 desktop processors, DDR5 memory up to 256 GB and includes Wi-Fi 6E and 2.5G LAN support.

The back-connect design relocates the 24 pin ATX power connector, 8 pin CPU power, fan headers, SATA ports and many front panel headers to the back of the motherboard , near the tray. MSI also ties this in with its EZ DIY features, such as screwless EZ M.2 Clip II, EZ PCIe Clip II for easier GPU removal and an EZ Antenna that snaps onto the rear I/O without threading. The front side still carries the PCIe 4.0 x16 slot, two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots with M.2 Shield Frozr heatsinks and the typical socket and DIMM layout.

Under the heatsinks, the PRO B840M-P EVO WIFI6E PZ uses a 7+2+1 phase power design with an 8 pin CPU power connector, 6 layer PCB and MSI’s DDR5 Memory Boost features, including EXPO and A-XMP support and the new Latency Killer mode for AM5. Networking is handled by 2.5G LAN plus Wi-Fi 6E, while the rear I/O keeps HDMI, multiple USB 10 Gbps ports, audio jacks and antenna connectors in line with the non PZ B840M-P WIFI6E variant.

This board marks the first time MSI’s Project Zero back-connect approach appears on an entry level AMD B840 design, after earlier PZ models were tied to higher tier Intel Z890 and AMD X870E platforms. For consumers, it means cleaner cable routing and “hidden connector” builds are now possible with cheaper AM5 systems rather than only premium boards and cases. Pricing has not been listed yet, but standard MSI B840 boards currently retail in the roughly 130 to 220 USD range depending on model and region, so the PRO B840M-P EVO WIFI6E PZ is likely to sit close to that bracket once it reaches retail.
