Intel drops mainstream 8-channel Diamond Rapids Xeon from roadmap

Intel has cancelled its next-generation mainstream Xeon platform based on the 8-channel Diamond Rapids design. This part was planned as the successor to today’s Granite Rapids-SP Xeon 6700P/6500P series and would have kept the cheaper, smaller-socket 8-channel option in the lineup.
Per Serve The Home report, the change follows a roadmap review under new data center leadership. Intel told STH it has removed “Diamond Rapids 8CH” from its roadmap and will “simplify” the platform by focusing on 16-channel processors and pushing those parts down the stack for a wider range of customers. In practice, only the high-end 16-channel Diamond Rapids platform (Oak Stream) remains, aimed at high core counts, PCIe Gen 6 and AI-focused servers.

A key driver is the move to 16 memory channels in the next generation of top server CPUs from both Intel and AMD, which raises per-socket capacity and bandwidth but makes maintaining a separate, lower-channel mainstream platform less attractive. Intel’s current 8-channel Xeon 6700P/6500P chips are popular because they lower platform and DRAM costs, yet history in the server market shows that smaller sockets tend to disappear as memory and core counts rise.
Diamond Rapids is the codename for Intel’s next-generation Xeon 7 P-core family on the Oak Stream platform, planned for 2026 with up to 192 Panther Cove cores and up to 16 DDR5 MRDIMM channels.
