Roblox Enables Age Verification for Chat Access Amid Child Safety Concerns

We previously reported on Roblox and potential risks that minors were being exposed to on the platform. To its credit, Roblox previously implemented measures to give parents more control over what their kids could interact with on the platform, and it is now following up those measures with strict limitations on interactions between children and adults in chats. According to the announcement , the new security measures will be voluntary at first, becoming obligatory globally by January. The forced age checks for chat will start in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands during the first week of December.

When they opt to do so, or when the age checks become obligatory, Roblox users will be prompted to use the camera on their device to perform an age estimation, which will assign you to an age group and limit chats to people in similar age groups. Minors will only be allowed to chat with adults after getting parental consent. In the given example, it seems as though there is some cross-over between age groups in their teen years. The age check process is powered by Persona, which is also responsible for age verification on Reddit in the UK, and it uses AI to estimate the user's age. The response to these new safety measures has been mixed, with some saying it will severely impede cooperation in strategy and role-playing games, while others have privacy concerns but admit that Roblox had to implement some sort of safety system.
