GPD Win 5 now shipping, Strix Halo finally for gamers

If someone had told me in January that it would take 11 months for AMD Strix Halo to ship in gaming handhelds, I would never have believed it. Yet here we are: the first Halo handheld has only just started to ship to gamers, which is both great news and quite disappointing.
AMD announced Strix Halo at CES, but only for three products, none of which was a gaming handheld. The entire year 2025 was basically us sharing news on new AI-centric mini-PCs, often packed with ridiculous configurations featuring 96GB or 128GB of memory. It was no secret that AMD is marketing this architecture as AI-first, and our hopes for it being a gaming-first system were left unanswered.
Finally, companies like GPD, AYANEO and later OneXPlayer have all announced new gaming handhelds powered by this architecture. AYANEO and OneXPlayer systems have not yet shipped, and the former has not even been fully revealed yet. Only GPD has announced, launched crowdfunding, and now shipped the system to the first gamers.
The impressions were shared on Reddit, and by that I mean a full review.

Redditor’s review finds Strix Halo on the WIN 5 delivers strong mobile performance at commuting-style use. All testing was done on battery at up to 35 W TDP, where the tester reports roughly 60 to 80% higher performance than Lunar Lake or Ryzen Z2 Extreme handhelds, with gains above 2x if you push power higher. Path of Exile 2 is finally smooth, Returnal can reach 60 plus fps at 1080p Epic with FSR Quality at 35 W, and Doom Dark Ages sits around 40 to 50 fps at 1080p 35 W and approaches 60 fps with FSR. At 35 W the system stays cool and quiet, with fan noise ramping only when moving past that power limit.
From a price and ergonomics angle, the WIN 5 costs about 1460 USD in this case, including 1410 USD for the unit on JD and 50 USD shipping to Singapore. The device weighs about 930 g with the battery, yet the reviewer describes it as well balanced for a 7-inch handheld and easier to handle than the WIN Max 2 or MSI Claw 8 AI plus.
Hopefully we won’t have wait much longer for AYANEO and OneXplayer to launch their systems, and hopefully the choice won’t be limited to these boutique brands, which usually tend to be on the high pricing spectrum.
