This week ASUS launched its flagship RTX 5090 GPU called ROG MATRIX. This graphics card has a special design featuring a native 16-pin power connector and optional GC-HPWR adapter (as shown above), which enables additional power. ASUS says that with power sources active, the card should gain up to 10% better performance out of the box. Although availability of the BTF motherboards is limited, enthusiasts aren’t waiting for such products, in fact, they are not even waiting or considering buying ROG MATRIX.

ASUS’s 800W “ROG Matrix” overclocking BIOS is now running on several custom GeForce RTX 5090 cards from other vendors, according to reports from Overclock.net users. The firmware was originally built for the ROG Matrix RTX 5090, a $4000 flagship that ships with an 800W power limit and a custom PCB. Enthusiasts have now flashed that same BIOS onto models such as Gigabyte’s AORUS RTX 5090 Xtreme Waterforce WB and Master, Palit RTX 5090, MSI RTX 5090 Ventus, and PNY RTX 5090 ARGB, using standard NVFlash tools.

The Matrix XOC BIOS raises the power limit to 800W and exposes more headroom for GPU boost clocks. ASUS advertises up to a 323 MHz boost over stock on its own Matrix card, while users running the BIOS on non-ASUS boards report an extra 100–200 MHz over their previous tuned settings, depending on the sample. Screenshots shared from 3DMark Steel Nomad and Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K show higher boost clocks and power draw compared to a 600W BIOS with similar core and memory offsets, which translates into higher benchmark scores and frame rates in heavy, GPU-bound workloads.

Not every RTX 5090 design accepts this firmware, but the exact reason is not clear. The Matrix PCB exposes three fan channels, and the BIOS expects to control three separate headers, cards with a matching triple-header layout tend to work, while models such as ASUS Astral Air/LC, ASUS TUF, and MSI SUPRIM Liquid either fail the flash or boot with broken fan control. However, it also works with cards that don’t have any fan headers active (like liquid-cooled models).

There is obviously an issue of exceeding specs and pushing an 800W power limit on boards that were not designed for it can stress VRMs and the 16-pin power connector. Since we don’t want you to burn your cards, only perform such mods if you are absolutely certain your card handle it. Still, props to whoever tried it on a $2000+ graphics card.
