Intel preparing W890 platform for next-gen Xeon 6 Workstation

Intel’s current W790 workstation platform arrived on 15 February 2023 together with the Xeon W-2400 and W-3400 “Sapphire Rapids-WS” families. The mainstream W-2400 line scales up to 24 Golden Cove cores, quad-channel DDR5 RDIMM at up to 4800 MT/s with as much as 2 TB per socket, and 64 PCIe 5.0 lanes from the CPU.
The expert W-3400 stack moves to eight DDR5 channels, up to 4 TB, 112 PCIe 5.0 lanes, and a 350 W top TDP on the W790 chipset and LGA4677 socket. Intel refreshed the platform in Q3 2024 with Xeon W-2500 and W-3500 parts that keep the same IO and memory topology but raise core counts to 60 cores on the w9-3595X and lift base power to 385W.

A new leak now lays out the successor W890 chipset built around the Socket E2 LGA4710 interface for “Granite Rapids-WS”, likely called Xeon 600 series. The board diagram and documentation show CPU support up to 350 W TDP, a Gen4 x8 DMI link to the PCH, and DDR5 DIMM plus RDIMM support, with RDIMMs rated up to 5200 MT/s and 2 TB in quad-channel mode, which is an uplift from W790’s DDR5-4800.
The SKU list includes at least eleven models. It ranges from Xeon 634 with 48 MB of L3 cache at 2.7 GHz base to Xeon 698X and 696X with 336 MB of cache at 2.0 GHz and 2.4 GHz base clocks. Mid-range chips such as 678X pair 192 MB of cache with a 2.4 GHz base clock, while several 72 MB SKUs sit in the 3.0 to 3.2 GHz band. Every part keeps DDR5 RDIMM support, PCIe 5.0 connectivity and the same Intel 3, Redwood Cove P-core dies as the Xeon 6 P-series.
AMD’s current Threadripper line remains the reference for this segment. Threadripper PRO 9995WX tops out at 96 Zen 5 cores with 384 MB of L3 cache and a 350 W TDP. The wider WRX90 family spans 8 to 96 cores. Granite Rapids-WS caps its cache at 336 MB even on the 698X and 696X. That figure lines up better with Intel’s two-tile XCC design that scales to 86 cores than with the three-tile UCC package used for 128-core Xeon 6 P-series parts.
