Most severe GeForce RTX 5090 12V-2×6 melt so far reported on Reddit

A new user report shows the most severe 12V-2×6 connector failure we have seen so far on an RTX 5090. Previous cases were usually limited to burn marks on the plug or early warning signs such as black screens under load. In this case the power connector is completely melted , suggesting prolonged overload or poor power delivery rather than a brief contact issue.

The affected system uses a Ryzen 5 5600X processor that reportedly stayed under 60°C, so the CPU was not the main source of power draw. The user states they installed the latest NVIDIA drivers and powered the card with a Cooler Master MWE 80 Plus Gold 850 W V2 unit . Based on the shroud and visible design, the card appears to be a ZOTAC RTX 5090 SOLID model.

Now here is the important part. ZOTAC recommends a 1000W power supply for all of its RTX 5090 cards, which means this configuration was below the vendor guideline. That makes user error a likely factor, even if other variables such as connector seating or cable quality cannot be ruled out from photos alone. This case is a clear reminder that high end GPUs should be paired with power supplies that match board partner recommendations, and that 12V-2×6 connectors must be installed with extra care.

We actually received a link to NVIDIA subreddit, but moderators already took the post down (the subreddit has a dedicated thread for that).
