Xbox brings Default Game Profiles to ROG Xbox Ally handhelds in preview

For now it’s only for Xbox ROG Ally handhelds

Update adds per-game FPS and power presets, UI and performance tweaks, and teases Game Save Sync and AI features coming to Ally X.

Xbox has announced a new wave of updates for the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X handhelds, headlined by Default Game Profiles now available in preview. The feature is rolling out for 40 supported games at launch, including Fortnite, Gears of War: Reloaded, Hollow Knight: Silksong, and other popular titles. Default Game Profiles aim to cut down on manual tweaking by automatically balancing frame rate and power consumption on a per-game basis when the device runs on battery power.

Each Default Game Profile is tailored to a specific title, setting a target FPS and recommended power level (TDP). If performance drops below the target frame rate, the system can raise power to stabilize the experience, while games running above the target FPS are capped to save battery. Xbox gives an example with Hollow Knight: Silksong, where the profile can add close to an extra hour of battery life versus Performance mode while still maintaining smooth 120 FPS gameplay. Players can toggle Game Profiles on or off from the Armoury Crate Command Center Game Bar widget in supported games.

Xbox is also shipping a series of usability and performance improvements for the ROG Xbox Ally family. These include faster gamepad response after login, quicker loading for large libraries, a snappier Cloud Gaming page, and a new Game Gallery filter that shows how well games are expected to run on the device, alongside stability and performance fixes. To access the new features, users need the latest versions of Armoury Crate SE, the Xbox app on PC, and Windows 11.

One thing to note, however, is that this feature is not always something gamers may desire to use. For instance, Xbox Ally running with external GPU can be locked to 60 FPS through these new game profiles. They are seemingly enabled automatically after update, so keep that in mind:

I'm doing benches on eGPUs on the Xbox ALLY X and I have DOOM the dark ages running and the game is locked at 60fps and I'm wondering wth is going on.

Xbox and ASUS are working on better sleep and wake reliability and improved microSD formatting, while ROG Xbox Ally X is set to gain AI-powered features such as Automatic Super Resolution and automatic highlight reels early next year.

Next week, a Game Save Sync Indicator will begin rolling out to make it clearer when progress is safely stored in the cloud, and the full screen Xbox experience, already optimized for handhelds, is expanding in preview to more Windows 11 devices including desktops, laptops, and tablets for Xbox and Windows Insiders. Xbox says it will continue to iterate based on player feedback, with more handheld-focused features planned.
