Embracer Offloads Two North American Studios, Will Retain Remnant Series Publishing Rights

The Embracer Group continues to restructure its development and publishing portfolios. The Swedish media company's latest move involves the divestment of Arc Games and Cryptic Studios, ending a four year-long run under the Embracer umbrella. The two long-running Northern Californian online gaming specialists have been picked up by Project Golden Arc Inc.—a relatively new organization, headed up by several of the Arc Games management team—for a cool $30 million. The publisher was previously known as "Gearbox Publishing San Francisco," but Embracer's complicated rebuilding process warranted another rename, following last year's offloading of the overall Gearbox Entertainment entity to Take Two Interactive .

Embracer Group's CEO, Phil Rogers, provided comment: "this transaction supports our key priorities by strengthening our focus on strategic assets and core IPs in Embracer while improving profitability and free cash flow. The deal also allows online multiplayer game Fellowship, developed by a talented external team in Stockholm, to find a great home within Coffee Stain Group. I would like to thank the teams at Arc and Cryptic for their hard work over the past four years and wish them all the best as we are confident they will thrive and develop in the years ahead." Embracer leadership is attempting to right the proverbial ship, after a reported $2 billion partnership fell through in 2023. Up until then, the Scandinavian firm gained plenty of notoriety—due to unprecedented rapid expansion, under the charge of former boss Lars Wingefors.
