Back in July, Intel was considering spinning off its Networking and Edge Group (NEX). However, Intel has changed its mind about selling NEX and decided to keep the unit within the company. "After a thorough review of strategic options for NEX—including a potential standalone path—we determined the business is best positioned to succeed within Intel," said the company in an email exchange for Bloomberg, adding that "Keeping NEX in-house enables tighter integration between silicon, software and systems, strengthening customer offerings across AI, data center, and edge."

It looks like Intel will increase investment in the NEX unit and prepare it for the scale that spans various forms of AI data centers and edge processing. In early November, Intel's chief technology and AI officer, senior vice president, and general manager of the Network and Edge Group (NEX)— Sachin Katti —left the company to join OpenAI. He was originally the one to send an internal company memo about the NEX group spinoff, so his departure possibly put an end to the effort to divest from NEX.
