AMD B650 motherboards to stick around for a bit longer

AMD is reported to have postponed the end of life for its B650 chipset, reversing earlier guidance that production would end in 2025 (it was supposed to happen in October). A new report Board Channels, claims that AMD has informed motherboard manufacturers that B650 supply will continue and that B650 and B850 chipsets will coexist.

AMD had previously told partners that B650 production would stop in third quarter, with vendors expected to clear inventory before the end of the year and move fully to B850 and B840 boards. B650 and B650E were introduced in late 2022 as mid range AM5 platforms and have since become some of the most affordable boards for Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 8000 processors.

According to the new information, rising DDR5 prices have sharply reduced demand for new DIY systems. Motherboard sales in November are said to be down by about half compared to the same month last year, with similar weakness expected in December. AMD and board vendors are described as reworking chipset procurement and production schedules in response.

Board makers are now expected to increase orders for the cheaper B650 chipset and restart or expand B650 motherboard production runs. The goal is to keep total OC build costs lower than B850 based systems and to offer entry level AM5 configurations for buyers who are squeezed by memory costs. B850 and B840 remain in the lineup for newer boards with wider PCIe 5.0 support.
