ASUS rolls out AGESA 1.2.8.0 beta BIOS for X870 motherboards
ASUS has released new beta BIOS updates for its ROG Crosshair, ROG Strix, ProArt and TUF X870 and X870E motherboards. The 1901 firmware for most X870/X870E models, and 1501 for some Strix and TUF boards, updates AMD AGESA to ComboAM5PI 1.2.8.0 and lists a simple changelog: update AGESA and improve system performance. The builds were shared by ASUS in-house overclocker Safedisk, who also notes that they are safe to use on these boards.
AGESA (AMD Generic Encapsulated System Architecture) is the low-level firmware block that handles CPU, memory and platform initialization on AMD boards. On AM5, recent AGESA revisions such as 1.2.0.3x and 1.2.7.0 have focused on memory support, stability and compatibility with new Zen 5 processors and APUs. Version 1.2.8.0 continues this path. Vendor notes from early 800 series releases describe it as a microcode update aimed at better DDR5 memory compatibility and stability on X870 and B850 platforms.

For ASUS X870 users this likely means changes to DDR5 training behavior, especially with EXPO profiles, high density kits and four DIMM configurations. Safedisk points out one major change: from this BIOS onward, tRFC2 and tRFCSB are now applied correctly, so pushing those subtimings too low can prevent the system from booting. Memory overclockers who reuse old profiles from earlier AGESA versions should expect to retune these values and may need to relax aggressive settings that previously worked.
These firmware files are still marked as beta, so they target testers and users who need the updated AGESA more than they need a completely proven configuration. Other vendors rolling out 1.2.8.0 on X870E and B850 have reported that the update is meant to improve memory support but can cause instability or make it hard to enter BIOS on some boards, which shows that implementation details matter.
