Discord tests auto restart on Windows when RAM use hits 4 GB
PCs are in a memory crunch right now. DRAM and NAND prices keep climbing as big chip makers and AI datacenters soak up supply, with some warning that higher RAM prices could last into 2027 and beyond. When a 32 GB DDR5 kit can cost as much as a mid-range GPU used to, asking software developers to trim their memory usage stops being a nice-to-have and becomes a requirement.
Microsoft has started tweaking Windows with things like an updated Xbox full screen experience on handheld-style devices, but Windows 11’s File Explorer remains slow and hungry, even with new tricks such as preloading in the background that add RAM overhead instead of cutting it.
Discord self-restarts when it hits 4GB memory
Discord is now under the same pressure. In a post on Reddit, a staff member explains that the team kicked off a focused effort in October 2025 to fix long-standing memory problems in the Windows desktop app. So far they say they have fixed more than nine separate issues, added new telemetry and profiling tools, and already cut p95 memory usage by about 5 percent for Windows users.
The controversial part is a new experiment called “ restart on excessive memory usage ”. Discord now tests an automatic client restart when RAM usage exceeds 4 GB, while normal usage should be under 1 GB. The restart is limited by strict rules: it only triggers when the user is marked AFK, never during a call, at most once per day, only after the app has been running for at least an hour, and it keeps open channels and message drafts so users can pick up where they left off.
Discord stresses that this restart logic is not a permanent fix . It is meant as temporary relief for users whose client runs away with memory, and it also feeds crash and diagnostic data back to the team so they can track rare bugs that hit less than 0.1% of the user base.

In a world where memory and storage are expensive again, and even parts of Windows still waste RAM, a chat app taking active steps to trim its footprint is a shift many users will welcome, as long as the “auto-restart at 4 GB” switch does not stay on forever.
