GPD and PureDIY show off a special modification kit for Win 5 hardware

GPD has showcased a third party conversion kit for its Win 5 handheld that turns the system into a tablet-style device. The project is not an official GPD design. The hardware comes from modder PureDIY and was first shown in a detailed teardown and build video on Bilibili. GPD still promoted the project on its own channel, which is unusual support for a community-made mod and makes the kit look more like an endorsed concept than a random one-off.
The PureDIY kit is built around the Win 5 handheld mainboard and comes in two versions. One version keeps the Win 5 battery external. The metal chassis is about 22 mm thick. It reuses the original 80 Wh battery pack or smaller external packs that attach to a familiar mounting rail on the back. Ports and cooling follow the stock layout with DC power, USB C, USB A, 3.5 mm audio and the original heatsink, but add extra mesh vents and optional grille lighting to keep temperatures under control when the device runs on mains power.

The second version integrates a 45 Wh battery inside a thicker shell. It adds a larger vent strip on the bottom, dual fans and porous vacuum insulation between battery and mainboard. PureDIY claims the cooling system can handle up to 85 W while keeping the pack thermally isolated. This tablet unit weighs about 740 g alone and around 917 g with the larger controllers attached. T hat is similar to a standard Win 5 with its 80 Wh pack.

Both kits replace the fixed grips with JoyCon style rails. The rails carry power so the host can charge the detachable pads while they are docked. The controllers continue to work wirelessly when removed because they have their own batteries. PureDIY shows several third party options with different sizes and stick modules. The shell also adds new speaker grilles, tritium style glow tubes on the sides, a power button with multicolor LED, DC vent lighting and an optional rear kickstand or magnetic back cover that turns the system into a small desktop when paired with a folding keyboard and mouse.

PureDIY does not present this as a retail kit yet. The video does not list any price or release window, and GPD has not confirmed that it will sell the mod or offer an official version. For now it looks like a public prototype that illustrates how the Win 5 platform could scale into a screen only device with either lighter external battery use or a thicker all in one layout.
