AMD finally launches FSR Redstone

AMD has officially launched the FSR Redstone technology stack today, after a limited launch in COD Black Ops 7 last month. Despite expectations, AMD is not launching all four main components of Redstone, as at least one will not be available until 2026. One feature will be limited to a single game (COD). The whole stack is only for RDNA4 GPUs.
The first thing to note is that AMD is officially changing the name of its “super resolution” stack. The FSR tech is no longer just about upscaling and frame generation. AMD is copying the NVIDIA DLSS stack by adding more technologies. For this reason it made little sense to just call it FSR 5 or similar. FSR Upscaling is not updated, it seems. The slide clearly states “formerly FSR 4,” so this component (which already used machine learning) is the same. AMD reiterates this tech is only available on Radeon RX 9000 series, and only with games that already supported FSR 3.1 (it is a drop-in replacement). That allows AMD to claim support in 200+ games by the end of this year.

FSR Frame Generation, formerly advertised as ML Frame Generation and incorrectly labeled by some users as multi-frame gen, is also part of Redstone. This tech will be in only 30+ games by the end of this year. AMD says it is designed to deliver “smooth and high framerates” and that it uses a neural network trained on demanding scenarios. It is meant to limit temporal artifacts and to fix some shadow casting issues, as presented in the F1 25 slide.

AMD Radiance Caching is not launching this year, but in 2026 (no game list, no dates yet). It will accelerate ray tracing and reduce radiance cache costs. Radiance caching is a global illumination technique where the renderer computes expensive indirect lighting at a limited set of points in the scene, stores those results, and then reuses them by interpolation for nearby pixels or shading points. This cuts down on the number of rays and bounces that need to be traced, so indirect light, color bleeding, and soft bounce lighting can be approximated faster, as long as the lighting does not change too sharply between cached points.

Finally, FSR Ray Regeneration is coming to more titles soon, but right now it is exclusive to COD Black Ops 7. This is an in-game implementation, which means support will depend on developers. Ray Regeneration will help to deliver realistic lighting and reflections, much like NVIDIA DLSS Ray Reconstruction.

Coming to 200+ games, 3.3x performance increase
AMD has confirmed which games will be getting Redstone update. Just keep in mind that this list has games that have ONE or more features.

AMD also claims that their Redstone stack will enable up to 3.3x better performance on average compared to native 4K gaming. Just keep in mind this is just frame generation and super resolution.

AMD is also releasing the FSR Redstone SDK today. It will be provided as an easy DLL integration, so we can expect better support soon. Other media outlets will give you more details. They may already have had access to this tech in some games and can share real-world experience.
It is quite disappointing that this it is not even the full Redstone stack launch and, more importantly, despite what some AMD execs seemed to suggest, it does not support RDNA2 or RDNA3.
