Framework hikes DDR5 upgrade pricing by 50% as memory costs spike

Framework has raised the price of DDR5 memory options for Framework Laptop DIY Edition orders by 50% , citing higher costs from suppliers and distributors. The change went live on December 12, 2025, and Framework says the updated pricing is still below current open market rates.

Existing pre-orders are not affected, and pricing for pre-built laptops and the Framework Desktop has not changed yet. In its blog post, the company says the memory market is volatile and more adjustments may follow, including for systems that ship with DDR5, LPDDR5X, or GDDR memory. Framework repeats three rules it used during earlier 2025 tariff swings: explain changes, only pass through cost increases, and cut pricing again if costs fall. It also tightened its return policy to require that memory from the order is returned with the laptop, after seeing attempts to buy systems for the RAM and send the rest back.

Here is what the DDR5 5600 add on pricing looks like now in the configurator (USD) for Laptop 16:

Framework ties the spike to a supply and demand mismatch driven by AI infrastructure, pointing to a single rack of NVIDIA’s GB300 using 20TB of HBM3E and 17TB of LPDDR5X. It also says the remaining major DRAM makers are prioritizing higher-margin server products, leaving PC-focused supply tighter, and highlights its relationships with Micron and module partners such as ADATA as part of how it plans to keep stock available.

The update lands days after Framework publicly criticized Dell and Apple for what it called inflated RAM upgrade pricing, while also saying its own price hike was unavoidable. Reporting around the Dell example has been disputed due to configuration bundling, but the broader point still holds: memory costs are rising, and OEM pricing is starting to move with them. Framework’s upgrades have been cheaper than many OEM upsells, but its laptops already sit at the higher end of the market, so pricier memory pushes its modular pitch further into premium territory.

Other big PC vendors are already warning customers about higher system costs. Analyst firms expect larger OEMs like Dell to prepare PC price increases in the 15-20% range starting mid-December 2025, while Lenovo has warned customers that existing quotes expire on January 1, 2026. In the prebuilt segment, system builders such as CyberPowerPC have also announced price adjustments tied to rising RAM and SSD costs.
