Report: Half-Life 3 tied to Steam Machine launch
Half-Life 3 may be getting tied to Valve’s Steam Machine launch again, with Insider Gaming Weekly journalist Mike Straw saying the game and the new hardware are still lined up for a Spring 2026 window. The claim is that Valve is holding the reveal because it cannot lock down final pricing while PC RAM costs stay unstable.
That lines up with what happened at The Game Awards 2025: Half-Life 3 was widely expected by fans, but it was a no show. Valve also still has not put a price on Steam Machine, even though the company has already announced Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and a new Steam Controller for 2026.
Now, everything I have, everybody I talked to, is still adamant that Half-Life 3 will be a launch title for the Steam Machine.

A couple of them are the same sources that have given me details on The Lord of the Rings game that is in development that I reported on. They’re not random, like, one-off people, and they’re still adamant that Half-Life 3 is coming in the Spring.

The memory angle is not a guess. DRAM and NAND pricing has been moving fast in late 2025, with multiple reports tying the spikes to supply being pulled toward AI infrastructure. Framework raised DDR5 pricing by 50% this week , and it has also been reported that broader memory chip shortages are pushing prices up across devices.
For Valve, that matters because the company has been clear that Steam Machine will be priced like a PC rather than sold at a loss like a console. Honestly, ever since it was announced, everyone has just been discussing its performance and memory spec. If component costs are swinging, it is harder to set an MSRP that does not create instant backlash or force a last-minute spec change. Valve has also said the internal price is not finalized yet, which fits the idea that the announcement timing is being managed around the bill of materials.
The timing pressure is real too. Rockstar now lists Grand Theft Auto VI for November 19, 2026, so the longer any Spring 2026 plan slips, the closer it gets to the year’s biggest launch window. If Valve wants Half-Life 3 to own the first half of 2026, it cannot wait forever to start the marketing cycle.
