Arctic launches MX-7 thermal paste

Arctic has announced MX-7, the newest entry in its MX thermal compound lineup. The company says it spent around three years updating the formula before bringing MX-7 to market.

Arctic’s headline claims focus on two changes: lower thermal resistance and higher cohesiveness compared with its prior paste. The company links that mix to better temperatures and longer lifespan across common jobs, including CPU installs and GPU repastes.

The application guidance is also different from what many users do with thinner pastes. Arctic says MX-7 should not be spread with a spatula because of low adhesion and high viscosity. It recommends the cross method instead.

On the spec side, Arctic lists MX-7’s viscosity at 35,000 to 38,000 poise and density at 2.9 g/cm³. The continuous use temperature range is rated at -50 to 250°C. Arctic also lists electrical properties, including volume resistivity of 1.7 × 10¹² Ω-cm and breakdown voltage of 4.2 kV/mm.

The company says thermal paste typically sits in the 1 to 4 W/mK range, and that higher advertised values are often inflated. Arctic argues thermal resistance matters more than a conductivity headline because it includes bond line thickness as well.

For performance, Arctic’s shared comparison shows MX-7 ahead of the previous-generation paste on Intel’s Core Ultra 9 285K, with a cited 2.3°C gap in that example (notice the scale on the graph). Results like this can move around based on mounting pressure, cooler contact, and how even the paste spreads, so the number is best treated as a single data point from Arctic’s own material.
