SK hynix gets Intel certification for 256GB DDR5 RDIMM built with 32Gb chips

SK hynix says its 256GB DDR5 RDIMM server memory module has passed Intel’s “Intel Data Center Certified” compatibility process for the Intel Xeon 6 platform, which the company calls an industry first for this capacity using 32Gb “1b” DRAM.

This is registered memory (RDIMM), the buffered module type used in servers and some workstations, not typical desktop DIMMs. Testing and validation were done at Intel’s Advanced Data Center Development Laboratory in the US, according to the announcement.

SK hynix also notes it received Intel certification earlier in 2025 for a 256GB DDR5 RDIMM based on its prior “1a” process and 16Gb DRAM.

On performance and efficiency, the company claims servers using the new 32Gb based 256GB module improve inference performance by 16% versus systems using 128GB modules built from 32Gb DRAM. It also claims up to about 18% lower power use versus existing 256GB RDIMMs based on 1a 16Gb DRAM, using a design built around a single 32Gb DRAM chip.

DDR5 pricing has been moving up amid tight DRAM supply, with OEMs already raising memory upgrade prices and market trackers warning that pricing pressure is not easing. This 256GB memory is not relevant for consumer PCs, but shows that the memory market is not slowing down, at least not for data-center.
