Japanese modder builds a giant LEGO-style Game Boy with an electroluminescent display and a custom video card

Massive GameBoy for LEGO fans and people with bad sight

Content creator LCLDIY posted a new build that turns a LEGO-inspired handheld shell into a working “big screen” retro gaming display. The project targets CRT-like softness without the bulk of an actual cathode ray tube. Pixel art games can look harsh on modern flat panels. CRTs hide that with interlaced scanning and phosphor glow. LCLDIY wanted a thin display that still produces a soft, glowing image. All that, while making the original GameBoy handheld larger (for some reason).

His pick was an electroluminescent panel. Pixels light up when an electric field excites phosphor materials. The result is a visible nostalgic glow that can smooth out harsh edges in older game visuals. Driving graphics to the panel was the hard part. It does not take HDMI or VGA. Instead it expects signals like horizontal sync, vertical sync, a clock, and data lines. LCLDIY says older CHIPS “6550-series” graphics can generate these signals, so he designed a dedicated graphics card around that approach.

The build also includes a modified BIOS with a custom resolution, burned onto a ROM chip for the card. The rest of the system is based on an Intel 845 motherboard.

For the case, LCLDIY designed a large Game Boy style shell borrowed from the LEGO verison, and printed it on a resin printer over about a week. After painting and assembly, the oversized buttons and decals complete the look. The creator says the screen’s glow makes the image soft, but the panel is limited by the era, including a lack of true color. All project files are shared as open source in the video description.
