Malaysia arrests 2 over video of man in headscarf drinking alcohol

A local man and a woman have been detained in connection with a video showing an individual wearing a headscarf while consuming alcohol in Malaysia .

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Commissioner M Kumar said the duo, aged 22 and 24, were arrested at about 4.30pm on Wednesday in Subang Jaya, Selangor state, to assist in investigations.

“Initial investigations found that the individual seen wearing a headscarf and consuming alcohol in the video was a man,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

Investigations are being conducted by the Special Investigation Unit under the CID Prosecution/Legal Division, he added.

“The case is being investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code, which relates to acts that may cause disharmony, disunity or hostility on religious grounds, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities or services,” Kumar said.

Under Section 298A of the Penal Code, an offence that creates religious disharmony or threatens unity carries a jail term of between two and five years upon conviction.
