Nine brands on 12V-2×6 power cables and adapters – opinions are split

Tech Overwrite had an interesting idea for a video: ask GPU and PSU brands directly whether users should power 12VHPWR and 12V-2×6 graphics cards with a native PSU cable or the bundled multi 8-pin adapter. He contacted 11 companies, nine responded, and the answers were split.
The replies landed in three buckets: use the GPU’s included adapter, use the native PSU cable when available, or either option is fine.
ASUS, MSI, and GIGABYTE told users to stick with the adapter that ships with the graphics card. SilverStone and ZOTAC said a native PSU cable is preferred when available, while SAPPHIRE, Thermaltake, Gainward, and Palit said either method is fine.

Recommend the bundled adapter (the cable that ships with the graphics card)
- ASUS : “The included GPU adaptor is recommended for the best usage experience…”
- MSI : “MSI officially recommend using the adaptor provided with the graphics card.”
- GIGABYTE : “We strongly recommend using the original cable provided with your graphics card, as it has been tested and verified for optimal compatibility.”
Recommend the native PSU cable when possible
- SilverStone : “If your power supply has a native 12vhpwr connector and cable then this will be preferred.”
- ZOTAC : “We always recommend using the native cable if possible,” adding the adapter exists for older ATX 2.x PSUs that can supply the power but lack the connector.
No preference
- SAPPHIRE : “You can use either one to power the card with. Both will work.”
- Thermaltake : Doesn’t recommend one method over the other, and says the choice depends on user preference and installation habits.
- Gainward/Palit : Says you can use any option, and frames the bundled cable as a fallback for PSUs without a native 12VHPWR cable.
The mixed messaging is confusing, and it does not help that NVIDIA still seems to lack clear, consistent guidance (judging from these responses). If you sum up the RTX 40 and RTX 50 melting reports, the same factors keep showing up: unsupported cable setups such as daisy chaining or split leads, low-quality angled adapters like early CableMod designs, and tight cases that force sharp bends near the plug.
Improper insertion was a well documented issue, I don’t think it’s a major problem now, yet many posts claim the connector was fully seated, sometimes even with an audible click, and the failure still happened. Burned MSI yellow-tipped adapters also keep appearing, often daily in Reddit reports. With this many variables, the GPU power cable should be debate-proof and problem-proof, it should just work.
Features like per-rail monitoring or uneven load indicators remain tied to expensive models such as ROG Astral and Matrix, even though basic safety LEDs are finally becoming more common.
