Best Buy resolves “rocks in the box” case, Redditor gets replacement ASUS TUF RTX 5090 and a matching tattoo

ASUS TUF RTX 5090 ROCK Edition

The history with a good ending.

Earlier this month we broke the story of a Redditor who claimed to have purchased an RTX 5090 GPU (ASUS TUF) from BestBuy. However upon delivery, something was not quite right.

A Reddit user who previously said they received rocks instead of an ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 5080 from Best Buy has posted an update saying the case is now resolved . They say Best Buy issued a refund, then agreed to honor the original sale price for a replacement card.

In the update, the user says Best Buy first promised a replacement, then denied a refund or replacement on December 2 after what they describe as a rushed “investigation.” He claim they were asked for photos of the packaging, then received a follow-up email minutes later saying the investigation was complete. The user says they called customer service daily, visited a local store, and was told the store could only “expedite” a support ticket because Best Buy retail and BestBuy.com are handled separately. He also say he filed a chargeback, a police report, and a Better Business Bureau complaint.

He said a BBB contact on December 12 helped move things forward. The user also points to shipping details he collected, including a reported weight increase of nearly 3 lbs during FedEx transit, plus what he describes as minimal outer packaging from Best Buy. After that, they say Best Buy issued the refund.

The user says the refund left them short because the card was no longer on sale, so Best Buy price-matched their original purchase and shipped a replacement to their local store. That’s a lot of work for someone whose card was stolen. Do better, Best Buy.

The story ends with the user picking up the RTX 5080 on December 16. The Redditor marked the occasion with a small tattoo as a personal “TUF rocks” reminder.
