MSI teases RTX 5090 LIGHTNING graphics card launch on January 5th

MSI Lightning GPUs return January 5, could be the Special Edition we already saw

MSI is teasing new “SPECIAL EDITION” graphics cards ahead of CES 2026. The teaser is framed as a “weather forecast” that switches to lightning on January 5, which reads like a nod to the return of MSI’s LIGHTNING branding.

January 5 also lines up with CES “Media Day 2,” a day before the CES 2026 show floor opens (CES runs January 6 to 9). If MSI is planning a GPU-focused reveal, that timing fits the usual pre-show cadence. MSI has used the LIGHTNING name for its higher-end GeForce models in the past, so the lightning iconography is hard to miss.

This teaser also matches what MSI described previously with two GeForce RTX 5090 “Special Edition” concepts. One was an AIO-cooled design with dual 120 mm radiators and extra attention on memory cooling. The other was an air-cooled design built around five STORMFORCE fans and MSI’s FiveFrozr cooling stack.

MSI has already been showing “GPU concepts” at trade shows, so a CES 2026 reveal for a finished version would track. For now, MSI has not confirmed the exact model name, specs, or release timing for any LIGHTNING-branded card tied to the teaser.

Naturally, the timing for these cards looks bad. NVIDIA could face a DRAM shortage like the rest of the market, and releasing anything with 16GB of memory could become an issue later.

One can imagine MSI is aiming to launch a flagship LIGHTNING model as a response to ASUS’s recently released ROG MATRIX . Neither model is expected to be affordable, with the ASUS card already priced at around $4,000 and running low on stock.
