AMD’s Redstone talk puts RDNA 3 support back on the table
In a PC World’s CES 2026 interview, AMD software chief Andrej Zdravkovic addressed the question many Radeon owners keep asking: will the Redstone stack ever land on RDNA 3. Zdravkovic leads AMD’s GPU software group and also serves as chief software officer, so this is the part of AMD that owns the call.
Zdravkovic’s core message was simple. Redstone is built around new ML-driven graphics features, and AMD wants the default experience to meet a bar for quality and responsiveness. In that context, AMD drew a hard line at RDNA 4 for the full bundle, because enabling features that miss the target can make the end result worse.

Adam Patrick Murray (PCWorld) was not satisfied with that response and demanded to know why AMD is unable to allow users to test FSR4 on other GPU series. Zdravkovic said AMD is not against modders who hack pieces of Redstone onto older cards. Zdravkovic also said a formal beta track for RDNA 3 is not planned today . However, Zdravkovic reacted positively to the idea and asked for suggestions on how to frame it as an opt-in experiment, with clear expectations.
That is where an “FSR4-lite” idea can make sense. AMD could ship a separate, clearly labeled experimental path for RDNA 3 that focuses on what works acceptably, game by game, and leaves the rest off. The point would be user choice, plus official packaging that avoids sketchy downloads and reduces confusion.
NVIDIA’s recent DLSS direction is the obvious comparison. NVIDIA has been rolling newer super-resolution models, including transformer-based updates, across RTX generations, while keeping heavier frame generation modes tied to newer cards. NVIDIA also warns that newer models can cost performance on older GPUs, and community testing has shown that hit on RTX 20 and RTX 30 in some cases. Users still get the option to try it and decide if the trade is worth it.
