MSI GeForce RTX 5090 LIGHTNING has three variants, LIGHTNING X model also revealed

MSI RTX 5090 LIGHTNING has at least three variants: X, Z, and an “OCER” sample

MSI’s RTX 5090 LIGHTNING lineup is not a single card. MSI now lists two retail models on the official product pages: the GeForce RTX 5090 32G LIGHTNING X (G5090-32LX) and GeForce RTX 5090 32G LIGHTNING Z (G5090-32LZ).

A third variant, called the LIGHTNING Z OCER (no product code and no listing on the official site), is a special version designed specifically for overclocking. These cards will not go on sale, and they are not easy to find or buy. Overclockers almost never sell them.

The retail lineup includes both Z and X models, both listed on MSI’s site. The Z is listed higher in both default boost and the MSI Center profile.

Both retail cards share the same headline power figures in MSI’s specs: 800W in “OC” and 1000W in “EXtreme”. MSI lists a 1600W+ PSU for Z, and 1500W+ recommended PSU (updated later) . MSI also lists the same card and radiator dimensions for X and Z.

Dual 16-pin power, and no “1-to-3” dongle support

MSI lists two 16-pin power connectors on both cards and adds a note that a “1-to-3 dongle” is not supported . This reads like a warning that the usual adapter approach is not part of the plan for LIGHTNING. As we know, three 8-pin power connectors will not offer the full power for the 16-pin power connector. One needs at least 600W (4x 150W), hence for this special GPU one will need eight 8-pin power connectors in total, or two native 16-pin connectors.

Apparnetly “OCER” 2500W XOC BIOS is not limted to OCER, but you will void the waranty

On MSI’s LIGHTNING Z page, MSI references a 2500W XOC BIOS and states that the warranty is voided when the mode is enabled. It is unclear whether this is controlled by a BIOS switch or if MSI assumes users will flash the BIOS. MSI does not say whether that process can be reversed or detected.

MSI has not shared pricing. There were claims that it may launch next month, but that availability is limited to 1300 units. Typically, a portion would go to reviewers and influencers. MSI has not said whether the cap applies only to LIGHTNING Z or also to LIGHTNING X, so total availability remains unclear.
