DDR3 motherboards see a 2 to 3x sales jump in China’s DIY market

Rising storage prices are hurting the DIY market. The latest report from Board Channels claims DDR5 motherboard sales fell sharply, and DDR4 sales are also weakening after a short-lived share gain. But one thing sticks out: DDR3 motherboard sales are reportedly up two to three times or more, and bundles that include DDR3 boards and Intel CPUs from the 6 to the 9th generation are selling well.

DDR5 stays expensive because the platform costs more to build and validate. DDR5 DIMMs add on-module power management and tighter signal requirements, which pushes board design and memory qualification costs up. Kits sold today also tend to be higher capacity and higher speed, which raises the price floor versus older DDR4 builds.

However, DDR4 is no longer a safe harbor because supply and platform support are moving away from it. New CPU platforms are increasingly DDR5-only, and that shifts the remaining DDR4 demand toward older systems and budget builds. When new DDR4 output tightens, pricing can move up fast.

Used DDR3 is easy to source from retired office PCs and older systems, so buyers can often find compatible kits locally without paying new-retail pricing. One should also mention the popularity of China’s budget X99 HEDT motherboards, which are often paired with surplus Xeon CPUs to get high core counts and lots of I/O at low cost. Those are DDR3 compatible too. So is the PC market now moving backwards?
