Cybenetics “Anti-Melt” GPU cable prototype aims to protect all 12V-2×6 connectors

The accessory nobody asked for, but 12V-2×6 GPUs may need it

Cybenetics Labs has a prototype “anti-melt cable” for 12V-2×6 graphics cards, but it is not on sale yet. The design is simple, and its safety functions still work even without an active USB connection .

The cable was developed by Aris Mpitziopoulos, known for Hardware Busters and for Cybenetics PSU certifications. The prototype combines a standard 12V-2×6 to 12V-2×6 cable with a small inline box that contains the electronics and a single LED. There is no display and no fan.

Because it is just a cable, compatibility is the main selling point. The unit fits cases, large air coolers, and graphics cards that other inline tools can struggle with, including some Founders Edition layouts and certain custom designs (this isn’t the case with Thermal Grizzly WireView). It is also easier to hide than add-on adapters that sit visibly at the card’s power connector.

There are limits. The cable must connect directly to the power supply. The version described uses a native 12V-2×6 PSU-side connector, so it targets PSUs that already provide that output. Systems that rely on dual 8-pin PSU outputs would need a different PSU-side end. Perhaps Cybenetics will come up with a similar solution for older power supplies at some point.

What is interesting is that USB Type-C is optional. USB is used for configuration and for reading sensor data, but the buzzer warning and the shutdown protection work without it. You can set thresholds in the software, apply them, then unplug USB and keep the same behavior. THe warning diode can be seen below:

In the software, current and temperature limits are configurable. The “Over Current Trigger Point” allows 8A to 12A per line, with 10A suggested for an RTX 5090. The “Over Temperature Trigger Point” can be set from 80°C to 95°C, with 80°C presented as a sensible target. Two timers control response behavior: a warning buzzer delay and a shutdown delay, both set to 10 seconds by default.

Monitoring is available when USB is connected. The software can show current across all six conductors and temperatures at both ends of the cable plus the center box, updating about every 100 ms. It can also log readings and export data to an Excel file, while the built-in charts are described as small and limited.

ComputerBase notes in practical use, brief spikes can show up as warnings without triggering protection. The buzzer is meant to react to a sustained limit violation, then the cable can cut power to the graphics card after the configured delay. If that happens, the display goes dark and the GPU stops drawing power, while the PC itself stays on.

Cybenetics Labs reportedly wants to sell the cable close to cost, but no production partner or distributor has been secured, and a market launch remains uncertain. Pricing and a release date were not provided. Still, it’s sad that we need such solutions in the first place. Perhaps the next-generation cards will have something built-in that will prevent such cases, and we will never hear about them again.
