RPCS3 says 70% of tracked PS3 games are now Playable

RPCS3 lists about 70% of PS3 games as “Playable” on PC

RPCS3 is an open-source PlayStation 3 emulator for PC. The project targets Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD, with ongoing work to broaden platform support, including ARM64 builds.

On the emulator’s official compatibility database, roughly seven out of ten tracked PS3 titles currently carry the “Playable” label. At the time of writing, the database shows 3,615 PS3 games in total, with 2,525 marked “Playable”, which works out to about 70%.

RPCS3 uses multiple labels to describe game status. “Playable” means a game can be finished with acceptable performance and without game-breaking issues. “Ingame” covers titles that still have major glitches, can’t be finished, or miss performance targets, while “Intro”, “Loadable”, and “Nothing” cover progressively earlier failure points.

What RPCS3 needs to run

To boot games, RPCS3 requires the official PS3 system software (firmware) installed inside the emulator. Hardware requirements depend heavily on the game, but RPCS3’s own documentation points to a few baseline needs:

  • PS3 firmware file
  • 64-bit OS and CPU : RPCS3 targets 64-bit systems, and the project’s docs and download page focus on modern OS versions.
  • CPU matters most : PS3 emulation is often CPU-limited, and the project recommends strong CPUs for consistent results.
  • GPU with Vulkan support : Vulkan is widely recommended for best results, with OpenGL available as a fallback on supported hardware.
  • Memory : RPCS3’s quickstart guidance calls out 8 GB of RAM or more as a practical baseline.
  • Windows runtime : the project’s FAQ lists the Visual C++ Redistributable as a Windows-side dependency.

The compatibility percentage is also a moving target. RPCS3’s database updates as new tests come in and as emulator changes improve or regress specific titles, so the “Playable” share can shift over time.
