Forza Horizon 6 launches May 19, PlayStation 5 version coming later in 2026

Forza Horizon 6 also for PlayStation 5

At today’s Developer_Direct, Playground Games shared a longer look at Forza Horizon 6 and its Japan-based open world. Xbox Wire posts adds details about how the team built the location, pulled in cultural references, and added new systems.

This time, the game starts with a player character arriving as a tourist, not a known driver. The story frames the Horizon Festival as a goal to work toward, rather than a starting position. The setup is to drop players into a new place with friends who know the area.

The Japan map is split into districts that change quickly as players move across the world. The Tokyo area includes suburbs with narrow streets and overhead wiring, a docklands zone with cranes and freighters, and a denser downtown with landmarks such as Shibuya Crossing, Ginko Avenue, and Tokyo Tower. The team aimed for the feel of driving in Japan, not a mile-for-mile replica, while still keeping Horizon-style traversal and stunts.

Two friends join the trip in-game: Jordy, a motorsports fan, and Mei, a Japanese car builder who offers local context. Playground Games also worked with cultural consultant Kyoko Yamashita to support the setting and details. Progression keeps the wristband system, and adds a Collection Journal inspired by Japan’s stamp-collecting culture, with a focus on discovering points of interest and saving photos to a personal record of the trip.

Player housing returns with eight homes that function as fast travel points and garage spaces, with decoration options and vehicle display. A new feature called The Estate adds a larger plot tied to the idea of akiya, an abandoned rural property that can be repaired and expanded using in-game credits earned through activities such as races, exploration, and deliveries. The game also adds Car Meets at three permanent locations, including the Horizon Festival, the Okuibuki parking area near The Alps, and Daikoku, with options to meet players, share designs, and buy a version of a car seen at the meet.

The launch roster is listed at about 550 cars. Xbox Wire also revealed two cover cars: the 2025 GR GT Prototype and the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser, with the GR GT Prototype used in the opening sequence that includes off-roading in The Alps and a race against the Shinkansen.

Forza Horizon 6 arrives on May 19 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud, and Steam, and launches day one with Game Pass Ultimate. Forza Horizon 6 supports Xbox Play Anywhere and is listed for PlayStation 5 later in 2026, with Early Access for Premium Edition players starting May 15.
