Modder turns PlayStation 4 Slim into gaming handheld with 7-inch 1080p OLED screen

PlayStation 4 portable offers 3 hours of battery life

Portable PS4 Slim build claims 7-inch 1080p OLED and up to 3 hours of battery life

Sony’s PlayStation Portal launched as a Remote Play device, but recent updates have started to shift the conversation around PlayStation handhelds. In November 2025, Sony added cloud streaming on PS Portal for PlayStation Plus Premium members, including support for streaming select digital PS5 games from a user’s library without using Remote Play.

Handheld rumors have also picked up around the next PlayStation generation. In late 2024 rumors about Sony working on a portable device intended to play PS5 games started to appear, and currently it is claimed that Sony will launch a PlayStation 6 handheld somewhere in the next 2 years.

Meanwhile, Redditor has build DIY portable “PS4 Slim”. Unlike Portal, this device can run games natively, and it runs full-fledged PS4 games like the original console. The creator describes the unit as stable, fully functional, and safe to use after months of revisions.

For this project to work the PS4 Slim motherboard was studied, then cut and modified to reduce size while keeping functionality. Modder also had to  redesign cooling system with active temperature management, plus an ESP32 microcontroller with custom firmware for temperature monitoring, safety thresholds with emergency shutdown, power monitoring, and battery charging supervision.

Display hardware is listed as a 7-inch 1080p OLED panel in 16:9, with HDMI output for an external screen . The battery setup is described as six 21700 cells rated at 6000 mAh each in a 3S2P configuration, for about 130 Wh. Runtime estimates in the post range from roughly 2.7 to 3 hours at around 44 W , down to about 1.3 to 1.5 hours at around 88 W, with shutdown at around 10 V to protect the pack.

Currently there is no mention of this project becoming a paid conversion kit, or open sourcing the parts that were designed for this system. Quite surprising that given the power efficiency improvements since the PS4 launch, Sony has not developed a similar device to this day.
