Sapphire RX 9070 XT NITRO+ continues to have issues

Two fresh threads add more attention to Sapphire’s RX 9070 XT NITRO+ and its 12V-2×6 power setup, following the five earlier cases we covered last month.

Sapphire RX 9070 XT NITRO cards cannot catch a break. The series remains a popular pick among gamers, and it is also one of the most visible Radeon lines shipping with a native 12V-2×6 connector. That connector family is already linked to burn reports on higher-draw cards, and Sapphire is now dealing with similar reports on the RX 9070 XT, even though this is a lower-power GPU than parts like the RTX 5090 that dominate most connector-related headlines.

Last month, we reported that Sapphire NITRO cards reached five known cases of burned blue-tipped adapter cables. Most of the time, the adapter shows the damage first, not the GPU-side connector. That points either to a faulty adapter batch or an implementation that is too sensitive to contact quality, cable strain, or small seating issues.

Like many GeForce designs, these cards do not appear to include active safeguards such as load balancing or thermal monitoring at the connector level. As a result, users tend to notice the issue only after symptoms show up, including black screens, freezes, crashes, or other stability problems.

Two new cases, plus problems with RMA

One of the new posts describes a burned connector and an RMA process that ultimately worked, but left the buyer frustrated. The buyer says the first card’s connector melted, and Sapphire RMA required paying shipping and insurance out of pocket.

Sapphire reportedly sent a replacement quickly, but the replacement arrived with visible scuffs and scratches. About two months later, the buyer reported heavy coil whine and a noticeable performance drop, leading to a second RMA request.

The other thread is closer to a melted-adapter report. The buyer says the adapter cable melted, while the pins on the GPU-side connector looked intact.

The buyer also reports that the card still functioned after switching to a PSU-supplied 12V-2×6 cable, and started looking into an RMA after an earlier dispute with the retailer.

Both posts point to the same issue users keep describing with this model: there is no clear warning before failure, and people usually notice something is wrong only after crashes, black screens, or instability.

Still, there is quite a lot of confusion surrounding this connector design. One of these Reddit users did not even use the native cable that was available with a new power supply, simply because it was not clear which option is preferred. It is also worth recalling the late December discussion , where a content creator asked multiple brands what users should use. The responses were mixed and did not provide a clear answer.
