Report: GTA 6 may launch without a boxed edition

Apparently, Rockstar Games is worried about leaks.

A new report from Polish outlet PPE.pl claims Take-Two does not currently plan to ship a boxed version of Grand Theft Auto VI on day one. PPE.pl attributes the information to “Graczdario,” described as a source involved with physical game sales in Europe, with a good track record of prior gaming-related tips.

The report says the main reason is leak prevention. Physical distribution can put copies into the wild early, which raises the risk of story spoilers, screenshots, and gameplay clips spreading ahead of launch. PPE.pl points to past cases where major plot material leaked before release.

PPE.pl also says the timing is unclear. The source reportedly heard conflicting scenarios, ranging from a boxed release a few weeks after the digital launch to a much longer wait that could stretch into early 2027. PPE.pl adds that more detail may surface around mid-February.

We are receiving more and more information that the boxed version will not be released at the same time as the digital version in order to prevent leaks. We are hearing conflicting reports: some claim the physical release will arrive 3–4 weeks after the digital launch, while others say it won’t happen before early 2027. More information will be available in mid-February.

Rockstar has reasons to be cautious. In September 2022, early-development GTA 6 footage spread widely online, and Rockstar confirmed the leak resulted from a network intrusion.

More recently, Rockstar and Take-Two have also been tied to a separate controversy around staff dismissals, with Rockstar stating the firings involved leaking confidential information in an external forum. A union dispute has challenged that characterization, and some reporting notes it is unclear whether the alleged leaks were connected to GTA 6.

For now, Take-Two and Rockstar have not announced any change to launch formats publicly, so the boxed-edition claim should be treated as a rumor. Rockstar’s current release date for Grand Theft Auto VI is November 19, 2026, with the game announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
