Intel replaces Core Ultra 9 285K “premium” box with simpler carton design

Intel shrinks Core Ultra 9 285K retail box, switches to a simpler design

Intel has published a Product Change Notification for select boxed Intel Core Ultra 9 processor 285K models, confirming a retail box update with a new, smaller carton. The document includes a before-and-after image showing the older “Ultra 9K Tier 2” style being replaced by a more compact “Ultra 9K Tier 4” box.

The change is mainly about logistics. Intel says the carton dimensions are moving from 165 mm x 150 mm x 64 mm to 116 mm x 44 mm x 101 mm , which increases pallet density and reduces volumetric storage needs. Intel also says the number of consumer units per pallet will increase to align with the existing “CPU only” shipping configuration.

Intel says there is no change to the processor itself, and no change to the Material Master Number or the box ordering code. Intel also warns that customers may see a mix of old and new packaging until existing inventory is cleared.

This kind of packaging downgrade is familiar for Intel’s desktop flagships. Intel often ships a larger presentation box early on, then moves the top SKU to a smaller, simpler kit later in the cycle.

Making room for Core Ultra 9 290K Plus?

Intel is also expected to launch a Core Ultra 9 290K Plus in the coming weeks. If that timeline holds, Intel may use the smaller retail kit for the newer flagship from the start, rather than running two packaging tiers in parallel.
