GOG adds Linux focus to GOG GALAXY engineering role, “Linux is next major frontier”

GOG focusing on Linux

A new “Senior Software Engineer (C++ GOG GALAXY)” listing says the client “delivers experience on Windows and macOS,” and calls Linux “ the next major frontier.” The job description includes a direct responsibility: “ Build and maintain GOG GALAXY on Linux.” The listing also says the role will shape GOG GALAXY’s architecture, tooling, and development standards with Linux in mind “from day one.”

This comes shortly after GOG changed ownership . GOG confirmed that Michał Kiciński, an original co-founder, acquired the company from CD PROJEKT, and said the DRM-free store approach stays in place. GOG also reiterated that GOG GALAXY remains optional.

Linux requests have followed GOG GALAXY for years, because the launcher has not had a native Linux client. Linux users often stick to offline installers, community launchers, or running the Windows client under compatibility layers, depending on the game and setup.

In a recent PC Gamer interview referenced by multiple outlets, GOG Managing Director Maciej Gołębiewski said Linux is part of the company strategy for 2026, but no timeline was shared.

Valve’s Proton has pushed Linux gaming forward by making many Windows titles run on Linux through a compatibility layer, and that work is a big reason the Steam Deck can rely on a Linux base. GOG may not build an equivalent stack inside GOG GALAXY. A smaller step could be tighter support for common Linux setups, such as smoother Wine or Proton-based launching, or integration that works cleanly alongside Steam installations.
