ASRock motherboards are now killing Ryzen 5 9600X CPUs, four cases in two weeks

ASRock motherboards no longer target X3D CPUs, 9600X also at risk

There have been four new cases pm Reddit that all describe the same kind of failure: a dead AMD Ryzen 5 9600X paired with an ASRock motherboard.

Across the threads, users describe systems that worked at first, then stopped posting without warning. Several reports mention the DRAM or CPU debug LEDs staying lit, plus common troubleshooting steps that did not help (reseating RAM, clearing CMOS, swapping parts, and testing with different settings). In at least one case, the CPU went through RMA after the system stopped booting. One poster also describes back-to-back 9600X failures on the same platform, with the second failure reported on BIOS v3.50.

The new 9600X reports follow earlier attention around Ryzen 7 9800X3D incidents on ASRock boards. Community tracking threads have tried to map failures by CPU model and BIOS version.

A December snapshot from the community “CPU failures/deaths” megathread shows Ryzen 5 9600X as the third most reported mode l in the dataset. The chart lists 183 reports for Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 50 for Ryzen 7 9700X, and 29 for Ryzen 5 9600X, followed by 22 for Ryzen 9 9950X3D. Because the snapshot is from December, those totals do not include the newer January Reddit threads that Wccftech collected.

The same megathread set also tracks BIOS versions at the time of failure, and no single version looks like a clear outlier. Reports are spread across “older than 3.25/3.26” (103 cases, 30.6%), BIOS 3.25/3.26 (75, 22.3%), BIOS 3.30 (74, 22.0%), BIOS 3.40 (48, 14.2%), and BIOS 3.50 (37, 11.0%).

It definitely confirms that ASRock’s latest BIOS doesn’t fix the issue and instead of addressing this problem publicly, they continue to release new firmware and even new AMD-800 series motherboards. Remember the 183 cases reported in the megathread are only those that Redditors themselves posted, no one knows the real figure.
