Modder shows a 64GB RAM mod for the ASUS Xbox Ally X handheld

The mod starts with a full disassembly and motherboard removal. The modder then flips the board and pulls the factory RAM packages from under the heat spreader tape. The stock setup uses 6GB Micron LPDDR5X packages rated at 8533 MT/s , which modder replaces with 16GB SK hynix packages to reach 64GB total. So, there are no changes to the memory bus, rather the memory density.

After the solder work, the rest of the job is firmware. Modder dumps the BIOS with a CH341A USB programmer, edits the APCB data, and then flashes the modified BIOS back onto the device. There’s one more important step, which is to change strap resistor changes as a way to keep memory speed at the intended target, since leaving straps alone can drop memory clocks to a lower value after training.

The end result boots into Windows after a longer memory training cycle. Modder checks Task Manager to confirm full capacity detection and reports 64GB at 8000 MT/s.
ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X 64GB mod process
- Removing the ROG Ally motherboard and exposing the RAM packages.
- Desoldering the stock Micron memory.
- Installing higher-density SK hynix chips that are arriving on cut PCB sections, so the chips are being removed first.
- Re-balling the new chips, then soldering them onto the board.
- Dumping and editing the BIOS/APCB using a CH341A programmer, based on the original ROG Ally 64GB mod.
- Changing strap resistors so memory is training at the higher target speed instead of dropping closer to ~7500 MT/s.
- Reassembling and verifying 64GB and the expected memory speed in Windows.
Obviously, for most gaming use, 64GB is overkill. The stock Ally X already ships with 24GB of LPDDR5X memory. A gaming bottleneck at 24GB is not common, but it can happen if someone pushes texture settings high enough to pressure shared system memory. I would say this mod would make a lot more sense at 32GB, but then, why even bother?
This remains a high-risk mod that can void warranty coverage and can kill the board if anything goes wrong.
